Press Release: Commission adopts White Paper on liner shipping conferences

The European Commission adopted a White Paper on 13 October 2004 in which it suggests to bring more competition in the maritime sector to the benefit of Europe's overall economy and of exporting firms in particular. The paper considers repealing the generous exemption from competition rules which has benefited the sector for almost 20 years and which allows it to fix the price for transporting goods between the European Union and respectively the Far East and the United States, as well as between the EU and other regions.
