Danuta Hübner, the European Commissioner responsible for Regional Policy, noted that the latest data on gross domestic product (GDP) per head in the regions of Europe showed that the Commission's proposals for regional policy and social cohesion for 2007-2013 were soundly based. The high degree of regional disparities needed to be addressed in order to release Europe's enormous growth potential. In its proposals, the European Commission called for a regional policy based on convergence, regional competitiveness and territorial cooperation. |
