According to a Special Eurobarometer (No 222, February 2005) 'Attitudes towards Development Aid' the European public expected the European Union to play a central role in development cooperation, especially in Africa. However, according to the survey, public awareness of Commission activities in this field as well as of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) was limited. It was the first time that this two-yearly opinion poll on development policy covered the 25 EU Member States.
