Belgrade’s pro-EU faction pushed out of power

Nationalist parties opposed to the European Union’s West Balkan integration plans agreed on the 28 May 2008 to form a city administration for Belgrade, pushing pro-EU parties out of power in the Serbian capital. The prospect of a hard-line nationalist becoming mayor in the city of 2m has sent shockwaves through the pro-EU alliance, which declared victory based on marginal gains in the 11 May 2008 parliamentary elections.
