Press Release: European Commission – working to combat fire and drought in the EU

The European Commission, through its Joint Research Centre and Environment Directorates General, is supporting the efforts of Member States to control forest fires by forecasting risks via the so called European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), a network with representatives from 19 countries. Together with EFFIS and the relevant forest fire and civil protection services in the Member States, the European Commission on 10 August 2005 released a comprehensive overview of the impact of forest fires in Europe for 2004. This report was to serve as a base for forest fire forecasting and control in the years to come.
