EU rule to open up local telecoms grids to competition

On 12.7.00 the European Commission adopted new rules requiring EU countries to open up the last mile of telecommunications networks to competitors as part of a sweeping change in the way it regulates the market. The new rule is part of a package with six other directives that will set the legal framework for the regulation of telecoms, mobile phones and data transmission.
