Observers of the spat between Commissioner Neil Kinnock and the director-general for administration, Horst Reichenbach, are increasingly of the opinion that the bugbear will soon be out of the Welshman's way.

Despite competition from Gerhard Schröder's man, capital-market whiz Klaus Regling, we hear that Reichenbach's stock as potential new director-general in charge of finance and economics is rising.

Though not seen as the most politically-astute player in the Commission, Reichenbach is regarded as a model technocrat whose experience at DG ECFIN stands him in good stead for the post.
