Declining EU soil quality poses threat to farming

According to the first Soil Atlas of Europe, published by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre on 28 April 2005, more than 16% of the European Union's land is affected by soil degradation, and soil quality is declining, particularly in eastern Member States.
