Date: 09/10/1997 Following last week's revelations that the Commission's new bicycle-friendly policies seem to work rather better on the paper inside civil servants' offices than on the tarmac outside them, Entre Nous can now disclose that the European Parliament's support for pedal-powered transport also appears to be somewhat lacking. Dutch Liberal MEP Florus Wijsenbeek has complained that while a complicated new system of travel allowances for parliamentarians permits colleagues who drive to work to claim expenses for the journey, no provision is made for those environmentally-friendly members who - like him - cycle to the hemicycle. |
