to the German coal industry despite continued complaints from the UK government. In a statement the Commission said it had approved the subsidy “because it helps to solve the social and regional problems affecting the future of the German coal industry”. In return for the aid, Germany promised that the coal would be sold at above production costs. In May, the UK government supported a complaint to the Commission filed by RJB Mining against “unfair” German subsidies.
