A key member of Trade Commissioner Sir Leon Brittan's cabinet, Nick Clegg, looks set to enter the European Parliament next year after being chosen by the Liberal Democrats to top the candidate list in his constituency.

Meanwhile, Foreign Affairs Commissioner Hans van den Broek's spokeswoman Lousewies van der Laan's chances of becoming a Dutch MEP improved last week after her party, D'66, recommended her as one of its top three candidates. Party members have to vote for their choice on a one-member, one-vote basis, but official recommendations are usually followed.

The Commission's resident land-mines expert has also decided he wants to enter the minefield of EU politics. Geoffrey van Orden will be standing as a candidate for the British Conservative Party in the forthcoming European parliamentary elections.
