During 2003, the ambitious timetable for the modernisation of the European Commission's accounting system has been very largely adhered to. The conceptual work on the project's many components has been completed, and implementation of the IT developments has commenced. The very challenging deadline set by Financial Regulation for introducing accrual accounting is 2005. The Commission benefits from external advice by PriceWaterhouseCoopers for accounting and from IBM for Information Technology.
