EU political directors have agreed to allow Nigerian officials into the Union

on a case-by-case basis, following new moves towards democracy by General Abdulsalam Abubakar last week. They claimed they could do this without changing the existing wording of sanctions, as there were provisions to allow in junta officials where absolutely necessary. The Union “welcomed” Abubakar's intention to hold elections in May 1999 with international monitoring, and noted “with great satisfaction” the release of ten political prisoners.
