The National Emission Ceilings Directive requires all 27 Member States of the European Union to report annually information concerning emissions and projections for four main air pollutants: sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, non-methane volatile organic compounds and ammonia.

The NEC Directive status report published by the European Environment Agency (EEA) in December 2008, presents country-specific and EU-wide information for the four pollutants covered by the directive.
