Iceland’s prime minister resigns

Iceland’s embattled Prime Minister Geir Haarde resigned on the 23 January 2009 citing medical reasons and called an early election for May 2009, a move that could prompt a dramatic shift to the left after a 20-year experiment in free market economics.
