"Ensuring that every citizen has enough food everyday is the first of the eight Millennium Development Goals that the global community promised to reach by 2015. Hunger still affects far too many people and, in the 21st century. It kills more than 3 million children annually, but even malnourished children that survive suffer irreversible consequences for their physical, intellectual and personal development. Almost a billion people lack reliable access to food, most of them living in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. When these people are caught up in crises, they are the ones whose lives, health and dignity are most threatened. On the eve of the World Food Day, we want to reaffirm our commitment to stand by developing countries that need solidarity and assistance to make the fight against hunger a success. Our hope is that this World Food Day should, by 2015, be a celebration for many countries that will have ensured their own food security thanks to global solidarity" declared the EU Commissioner for International cooperation, Humanitarian aid and Crisis response, Kristalina Georgieva and the EU Commissioner for Development, Andris Piebalgs.
