Europe’s leaders recoil from unity

Commentary feature. German Chancellor Angela Merkel is right. The EU as we know it would not long survive the implosion of its most ambitious project - economic and monetary union.

The crisis of the euro is a crisis of Europe. The continent is slipping into a new nationalism. What we are seeing now is the pinched nationalism of a Europe that has lost confidence in its future.
