Caja Madrid and six smaller Spanish savings banks announced in January 2011 that they would pool all their retail banking business in a new joint company that will be Spain’s biggest domestic retail bank. This followed another announcement in January that La Caixa, the Barcelona-based savings bank, would launch a listed bank valued at €20.6bn as part of the restructuring of the banking sector in Spain. |
