Microsoft formally turned to the EU for help in its flagging attempts to counter Google’s dominant position in internet search, March 2011, marking a notable reversal after its own long-running antitrust battles with Europe. The software company filed its first official complaint to the European Commission, 31 March 2011, accusing Google of a 'pattern of walling off content and data' on the internet to prevent other search engines from being able to compete effectively. The complaint comes amid a broad investigation in the European Commission's competition department into Google’s search and advertising practices, triggered by complaints from three companies in 2010, one of which is now a part of Microsoft. |
