On 23 October 2011, there was a severe earthquake in the east of Turkey measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale. The European Commission coordinated the provision of European assistance to Turkey after the Turkish authorities requested the activation of the European Civil Protection Mechanism on 26 October.

Turkey has called on Europe to join the relief effort by providing family tents to help shelter the survivors.
