Basic banking services

This briefing paper examines the current state of play across the EU in terms of access to basic banking services and discusses the European Commission Recommendation of July 2011 on access to basic bank accounts for all citizens. Section two includes a detailed description of the current state of access to basic banking services for a selection of 10 Member States, namely Bulgaria, Cyprus, Denmark,France, Ireland, Luxembourg, Italy, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain. The paper also identifies the main hurdles met by citizens accessing bank services in Member States in which they are not permanent residents.
