Anti-EU sentiment in various EU Member States has been less about austerity than something potentially more insidious – a revolt against the very idea of further integration which most economists and senior EU officials believe is indispensable to getting out of the eurozone economic crisis. It is this rebellion against further integration, not the revolt against austerity, that will do most to undermine Europe’s ability to manage the crisis in the months to come. 'Good intentions and sound policies are not enough,” said an EU diplomat. 'Ultimately, it must be supported by those for who it was made'. |
