The European Commission tabled on the 8 November 2012 the CARS 2020 Action Plan aimed at reinforcing the automobile industry's competitiveness and sustainability heading towards 2020.

The plan was the first concerted response to a worsening crisis that was hurting some of Europe's biggest companies and endangering tens of thousands of jobs.

Carmakers welcomed the plan’s long-term measures to support the sector but urged the EU to take 'real action' immediately and marshal its resources to help them as they embarked on deep restructurings.
