Banks to halt evictions in “extreme” cases

Spain’s banks told the Spanish government in November 2012 that they were willing to freeze evictions of destitute homeowners. The announcement came ahead of a meeting on the 12 November 2012 between the government and the main opposition Socialist Party to find a solution to a problem that was assuming an increasingly tragic face.

Lenders from the banks have foreclosed about 400,000 properties since the implosion of Spain’s decade-long property bubble.
