The UK Government's two year Balance of EU competence review aims to audit the impact of the EU on the UK. It covers 32 policy and legislative areas. Many local authority functions are affected by EU laws, which they comply through UK Statutory Instruments or EU Regulations. These can have a significant, administrative, financial and regulatory impact. The LGA responded to the Review because it believed more needed to be done to ensure the process of negotiating, transposing and implementing EU laws is effective. The LGA recommended practical steps were taken to achieve this within the UK and in Brussels.
