On 18 October 2013 Androulla Vassiliou, the European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth visited the London Language Show where she highlighted the increased European Union support which will be available from January 2014 under the new Erasmus+ programme.

A new report voiced by BBC News on the 20 November 2013 warned that the UK has an "alarming shortage" of people able to speak the 10 languages vital to future prosperity and global standing of the country.
