The European Commission on the 13 August 2014 published information about a project called Tools for Brain-Computer Interaction (TOBI), which is working on technologies that could improve the quality of life of people with serious physical impairments by allowing them to regain control of paralysed limbs, surf the web and take 'virtual' walks with their thought.

The TOBI project ended last year and the different prototypes are still being fine-tuned. Some equipment is available for patients at clinics and hospitals which are TOBI partners.

13 partners from Austria, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and the UK participated in TOBI, which has received funding through the EU seventh framework programme for research and technological development (FP7) and Horizon2020.
