One of the major issues at stake in the European elections 2014 was the appointment of the members of an institution, the European Parliament, which had then experienced an historic ascendency in terms of its powers. It enjoyed significant prerogatives in the normative, budgetary and surveillance spheres, finding voice by way of many decisions and votes during the legislature. From a partisan standpoint these elections were marked by a hesitant battle between the candidates who had been called to sit within the groups comprising the European People's Party (EPP) and the Socialists & Democrats (S&D), which were both due to come out ahead in the vote. From a political point of view these elections would result in the election of MEPs who would play a decisive role in addressing many issues during the 2014-2019 legislature. |
