Emily O’Reilly was re-elected by Members of the European Parliament as the European Ombudsman for the EP's 2014-2019 term on the 16 December 2014. During the secret ballot, she was backed by 569 MEPs. O’Reilly, who is from Ireland, was first elected European Ombudsman on 3 July 2013, after her predecessor retired. She was the only candidate in the December 2014 ballot.
