European leaders and the head of the International Monetary Fund agreed on the 2 June 2015 to step up the intensity of talks over Greece’s fate after a meeting in Berlin about ways to avert a default. The meeting took place at Germany’s government headquarters with Chancellor Angela Merkel, IMF chief Christine Lagarde, European Central Bank President Mario Draghi, French President Francois Hollande and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker. The goal was to work out an offer that Greece could consider in the coming days before a G7 meeting in Bavaria at the end of the week. Further talks were held on 3 June 2015 in Brussels, once again without any agreement on a plan to save Greece's finances. However, the Greek government and its creditors said they had made progress towards a deal. A 'truth' committee, created by the Greek parliament in March and April 2015 to investigate the legality of the bailouts and whether Greek debt has to be repaid, was set to release its first conclusion on 18 June 2015. On the 5 June 2015 Greece's prime minister Alexis Tsipras warned international creditors not to impose humiliating terms on his country as it sought urgently needed bailout funds. He said that negotiations were at a 'critical' stage, but that the lenders' proposals were 'not realistic'. |
