On 19 June 2015, the Council of the European Union closed excessive deficit procedures for Malta and Poland, confirming that they had reduced their deficits below the EU's 3% of GDP reference value. Following the global financial crisis and recession of 2008-09, the excessive deficit procedure has been used to support a return to sound fiscal positions. |
