Expert view: Russia steps into Syria

Moscow’s intervention is indicative of a weakening Syrian army. Western countries wary of the Russian escalation in Syria can turn it into an opportunity or continue with the unhelpful policy of wait-and-see. The appropriate response to the Russian build-up is to raise the stakes and make the Syrian regime realize that a political settlement is more desirable and less costly.
