US officially sues Volkswagen over emissions cheating

The US Justice Department decided in January 2016 to officially sue German carmaker Volkswagen over its emissions-cheating software in some of its diesel engines, with hundreds of thousands of cars affected.

The lawsuit was based on the assumption that Volswagen had illegally installed software designed to thwart US emissions tests in the lab, with that software switching off to show better results in real-world driving conditions.
