A traditional sector, postal services continue to play a vital role in contributing to EU territorial, social and economic cohesion. Since the EU introduced full market opening of postal services in 2008, the sector has experienced far-reaching changes such as a decline in letters sent, rapid development of e-communication and e-commerce and the emergence of new customer needs. A European Parliament own-initiative report scheduled for debate in the September 2016 plenary session, assessed these developments against the backdrop of the EU’s regulatory framework for postal services.
