Russia's President Vladimir Putin cancelled on 11 October 2016 a scheduled visit to France, amid tensions between the two countries over Russian involvement in the Syrian conflict. The row started as Russia blocked on 8 October 2016 a draft French UN resolution calling for an end to the barrage of air strikes on the rebel-held east of Aleppo. Later, France's president said Syrian forces had committeed a 'war crime' with the support of Russian air strikes. Analysts saw the cancellation as part of growing tensions between Russia and the West, reminiscent of the Cold War. |
