Reactions to the passing away of Mário Soares

Former Portuguese prime minister and president Mário Soares died on 7 January 2017 at the age of 92. The European Commission president released a statement on this regard.

International stakeholders from across the world paid their respect to the political figure, seen as a driver of resistance to dictatorship in Portugal and of the fight for democratic transition in the country. As prime minister, Mr Soares played a key role in Portugal's EU accession.
