The European Parliament's environment committee adopted on 24 January 2017 a position on a set of proposals on waste. The proposed amendmemts state that the share of waste to be recycled should be raised to 70% by 2030, from 44% today, while landfilling should be limited to 5%. They also advocate a 50% reduction in food waste by 2030. The plenary session confirmed on 14 March this position. As part of a shift in policy towards a circular economy, the European Commission put forward in December 2015 a legislative package of proposals concerning waste. The Council of the European Union adopted its position in June 2016. |
