The European Commission welcomed on 29 April 2017 the signature of a revised cooperation agreement between Europol and Denmark, following the outcome of a referendum in the country which rejected full membership in the organisation. The document results from efforts to minimise the negative impact of Denmark's departure from Europol on 1 May 2017.

The solution agreed with Denmark is a tailor-made arrangement allowing for a sufficient level of cooperation, including the exchange of operational data and the deployment of liaison officers. The country was set to have a unique status, allowing for close ties with Europol without amounting to full membership.

The agreement was signed just days before a new legal framework for the Europol applies. The regulation was adopted in May 2016, entered into force a month later and was set to take effect in all member states as of 1 May 2017.
