Martin Shipton argues that cultural and communication gaps, and a weak indigenous media, led to the surprise Brexit result in Wales in June 2016. 52.5% of voters in Wales backed Leave, compared with 47.5% supporting Remain. The vote for Brexit in the UK country that had profited more than others from the EU in financial terms was a shocking tale of how an alienated and ill–informed electorate made a decision based on misconceptions that was almost certainly against its own best interests. |
