Conclusions on Afghanistan

These conclusions reaffirm the EU's political commitment to support the country and its citizens, and highlight the connection between future political and financial support with respect and promotion for democracy and a values-based system. The document also reiterate the EU's support for a negotiated political settlement leading to lasting peace and reconciliation.

The Council calls on the Taliban to build trust and confidence allowing the start of intra-Afghan negotiations. They also urge the Taliban to respect the spirit and letter of the agreement with the United States signed in February 2020. The EU condemns the most recent attacks on humanitarian and medical personnel and facilities.

Finally, the EU calls for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire to focus efforts on tackling the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic.
