Summary: In 2020, the European Union adopted a new Biodiversity Strategy for 2030 setting out a comprehensive package of commitments and actions to put Europe's biodiversity back on the path to recovery by 2030. The Strategy calls on the Commission to put forward a proposal for legally binding EU nature restoration targets to fill the gaps in the existing regulatory framework and promote the restoration of degraded and carbon-rich ecosystems. Doing so will also give a major boost to Europe’s other key environmental challenge, that of climate adaptation and mitigation as well as disaster prevention. |
