When the EBRD started work twenty years ago, eastern Europe and the countries of the former Soviet Union were suffering from a legacy of industrial pollution and environmental neglect. The Bank has helped to change that. This special report highlights how sustainability is a fundamental part of the EBRD’s mandate and how in the past two decades since its establishment – and the first Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 – the Bank has promoted environmental and social sustainability through its investments in projects, financial intermediaries and technical cooperation programmes. |
