The electoral campaign in France was strongly featured by the debacle between President Emmanuel Macron's pro-EU La République En Marche! (LREM), and Marine Le-Pen's Eurosceptic Rassemblement National (RN), in the framework of long-standing protests across the country relating to the emergence of the Yellow Vest movement. Pre-electoral polls suggested a tight race between the two parties, which embodied two very distinct visions for the future of the European Union (EU).

At the end, LREM (22,41%) failed to defeat Le Pen's RN (23,31%). The biggest surprise of these elections was the score obtained by the green party Europe-Ecology-Les Verts (EELV), which won 12,8% of the votes and became the third largest French force in the European Parliament. Right-wing party Les Républicains (LR) only got 8,2% of the votes, compared to more than 20% in 2014. La France Insoumise (LFI) gained 6,7% of the votes.
