SOCIAL affairs ministers confirmed that the fight against unemployment remains the Union's top priority.

Social Affairs Commissioner Pádraig Flynn was asked to prepare a proposal to establish a new employment policy committee to act as a partner to the economic policy committee. Flynn stressed the importance of optimism, bearing in mind the economic and structural progress being made by the EU in the fight against unemployment. He urged ministers to raise the profile of their work in the run-up to the Madrid summit. “We cannot leave proposals for the future to Ecofin alone. The Social Council has twice been given the explicit mandate to act on a par and jointly with Ecofin. Frankly, nothing less than our collective credibility as a Council is a stake,” Flynn said.
