Transport Commissioner Neil Kinnock could always be a geography teacher if the going gets tough in Brussels.

His refreshingly straightforward approach was reflected in his response to a reporter's question at the end of last week's meeting of transport ministers.

Kinnock was asked if it was right that a small country such as Switzerland should be able to hold up a deal on EU road haulage arrangements just because of a linked problem over access to Alpine routes for European trucks.

“Switzerland only seems small because it's all folded up,” explained Kinnock. “If you opened it out, it would be bigger than the United States.”

Now that's the kind of geography lesson Entre Nous understands.
