Support for Ciudadanos has risen substantially in Spanish opinion polls in 2018, with the party in first place in several cases. But was the party really on the brink of taking over from Mariano Rajoy’s People’s Party and becoming the dominant force in Spanish politics?

Alejandro Quiroga highlighted several factors, including the crisis over Catalan independence, that were currently working in the favour of Ciudadanos, but noted there were still major challenges that would have to be overcome if the party was to translate its polling figures into an election victory.
