A plan to supply the needy in EU countries with food from the Union’s mountains of surplus produce

was approved this week. The scheme covers the supply in 1999 of 87,000 tonnes of grain, 62,985 tonnes of rice, 14,500 tonnes of olive oil, 24,480 tonnes of milk powder and 20,459 tonnes of beef. The food will be distributed by relief agencies and the programme will cost some 200 million ecu to implement.
