In this Policy Brief, Corina Stratulat and Claire Dhéret argue that the outbreaks of protest witnessed in many EU member states over the past few years make clear that alongside all the economic difficulties, democratic and social liabilities have become an integral part of the crisis Europe is currently facing. The authors insist that this popular outcry should not fall on deaf ears among policymakers. Conversely, any reform plans that do not simultaneously address all these issues as part of a new, common vision for the EU will prove insufficient to end the public unrest that has characterised the on-going crisis.
