A year of Europe – 2004

The year 2004 will probably prove to be a turning point in the development of the European Union. It saw a substantial enlargement of the Union, the election of a new Parliament and the appointment of a new Commission. The foundations were laid for a Constitution for Europe, and the first steps taken towards a more effective strategic and financial framework intended to provide the Union with the resources it needs to pursue its ambitions.

This information brochure gives a selection of the major events marking the European Union's activities in 2004. For more detailed information, the reader may refer to the 2004 General Report on the Activities of the European Union. The General Report is published each year by the Commission as required by the Community Treaties.
