Georgia’s rebel region of Abkhazia raised the stakes in its territorial dispute with Tbilisi on the 2 September 2009 by threatening to sink Georgian vessels found sailing near Abkhazia’s Black Sea coast.

Georgia’s law of occupied territories adopted after the war of August 2008 imposed trade sanctions on Abkhazia and banned ships from approaching the region without Tbilisi’s consent.
